In the design stages of the Practikal® Carrier Handle prototypes were sent for review to healthcare and medical organisations such as: Arthritis Care UK, The Raynauds And Scleroderma Association, The Disabled Living Foundation, The Disabled Living Centres Council, and The College of Occupational Therapists. In each instance it was agreed that carrying plastic carrier bags where the user's grip was distorted or squeezed into unnatural shape would be considered harmful; furthermore, frequent repetition of this could be arguably seen to be hastening the onset of arthritis.

Occupational Therapists at Disabled Living Centres around the UK have reported frequently of advising patients to avoid further distortion of their hands and fingers when carrying things like carrier bags which are the most frequently used form of final packaging used by high street retailers. An unfortunate weakness in the design of carrier bags, most notably due to the costs of mass production, is within the handle loops of those bags and most notably in plastic carrier bags. The handle loops, by nature of what they are (flexible loops of plastic), often stretch under weight and become painful strands that cut into the user's hand. Indeed other varieties of carrier bag of varying materials, when heavily filled, grossly distort the user's hands and fingers when carried. There is a definite need for prevention and for protection against these harmful effects.
